Contemporary Gem in Old Town

A contemporary gem in Old Town on 1.43 acres within the city limits. An amazing urban farm or an opportunity for building more.  Overlooking Butcherknife trail in the heart of Steamboat Springs sits a contemporary gem designed to feel as if you were living in a great, old tree. It is a TALL house.  “Up here,” thought the architect, “this could be where life happenes." This could be where you’d cook for friends, eat food from the garden or just admire the views.” While the footprint is small, the spaces were carefully considered with the intention of being able to fully enjoy the setting.  And within the rooms there are unique spaces. There is as much variety in the interior environment as one would have in a house many times the size.

The house is on is the foot trail artery of Steamboat and it can get you everywhere. It’s great for kids and dogs and even for horses. The house is right at the top of the trail to Strawberry Park elementary and middle school, which is the same trail that branches off to Stehley Park and a few more blocks you can walk through a charming part of town to the main streets of Old Town, the Yampa River and all the downtown restaurants and shops, the rodeo grounds and Howelsen Hill.

This house is close enough to Buitcherknife and Spring Creek to be able to hear both.

This house embodies the best of two worlds: it is very contemporary yet has the warmth, grounded feeling and history of an old house. Throughout, 150 year old carefully salvaged wood floors from a house in Providence Rhode Island are blond fir completing the timeless Scandinavian look.

Three floors tall, with an entry and bedroom/studio and bathroom on the first floor. Kitchen, dining and living room on the second floor with decks to the outside. Master bedroom, bathroom and second bedroom on the top floor with windows that allow you to really savor the surrounding splendor and night sky.

Entertaining for me means getting friends in the kitchen and collaborating on a great meal.  The kitchen works really well for that because everyone can find a place around the counter. Special attention was given to where we placed the equipment and storage so that everything would be right at hand and with all “drawer storage” the work-surface is open all the way to the ceiling and completely open to the living area and fireplace.

With 360 degrees of views you can see the ski mountain, the hot-air balloon rides down valley, Howelsen Hill, and up through Strawberry Park at the east side of Copper Ridge, Rocky Peak, Soda Mountain, and Buffalo Pass.

Lots of windows doesn’t compromise the snug warmth of the house on winter nights - supplied by a company in the Scandinavian region, they are custom made for intense sun and cold temperatures. They are tight, triple-paned, and filled with argon to block the transfer of temperatures. The “tilt-turn” way they open allows you to keep them clean from the inside of the house as well. Adding to the snugness of the house are the tightly sealed, thick panels of insulation that clad the house.

787 Mckinley is a design wonder that will continually delight those who live there with the constant visual reminders of all that is wonderful in this area.
