The Tomb of Jesus: A Place of Spirituality

A stone's throw away from the town of Bedford, lies a complete replica of the revered tomb of Jesus, where the land is steeped in spirituality and pilgrimage. Imagine having the privilege of residing near this sacred site, allowing you to embrace a sense of peace and harmony that can only be found at the foot of the cross.

The Tomb of Jesus, also known as the Holy Sepulchre or the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, is a significant religious site located in the Christian Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem. According to Christian tradition, it is the place where Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and resurrected. The tomb is a central pilgrimage site for Christians from various denominations, including Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant believers.

Holy Land USA Bedford has a life-sized tomb situated as the base of the property, along with a seating venue for Church services, prayer meetings, Sunrise Services and Concerts.  The tomb is marked by a stone bench or shelf called the “Burial Bed.” According to tradition, this is where Jesus' body was laid after his crucifixion. The burial chamber is small and dimly lit, evoking a sense of solemnity and reverence for pilgrims who visit. Visiting the tomb is a profound and emotional experience for pilgrims who seek to strengthen their faith and connect with the events central to their religious beliefs. It provides believers with a tangible connection to the historical events of Jesus' life and death and serves as a focal point for meditation, prayer, and worship.

The significance of the Tomb of Jesus extends beyond its physical structure; it represents the foundational belief in Christianity that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and the Savior of humanity. The empty tomb, where Jesus is said to have risen from the dead, is the ultimate confirmation of his divinity and power over death, making it a symbol of hope, redemption, and eternal life for Christians worldwide.

Holy Land History

As told by the current owner:

From the 1900’s, the Gray family owned the property now called Holy Land USA Bedford. They had a large apple orchard on the acreage and a brandy wine mill (near the tomb area now called the Upper Room).  Prohibition hit and the government actually came in, took over the mill and kept it running throughout prohibition. In 1935, the government added the small cabin, which was their office.

The larger building (near the tomb) with the big tall area (now called the Upper Room) was where they kept all of the empty barrels. They had two mosh pits inside, just like the one that's there now. They also had a flume (water channel) that ran from the top of “slick rock” all the way down to the water wheel. There was as a dam as well, which the government busted when they turned it back over to the Grays.

I was told that the government ran it 10-15 years and then handed it back, but they couldn't run anymore alcohol out of it obviously, so it sat idle ever since the government quit running it. The property was later put up for sale. Robert (Bob) Johnson and his son Campbell Johnson had walked the property and Campbell was contemplating buying it and he wanted his dad to come look at it. Soon after, Campbell died in an accident.

Bob decided to buy the acreage and dedicated it to Campbell and turned it into a Nature sanctuary. Later Bob started going to the Holy Land in Jerusalem. When he came back, he got the idea of recreating Jerusalem because he had the rocks and formations similar to the Holy Land. And so it was laid out similar to the Holy Land including the Jordan River as he wanted to map out the journey of Jesus' life.

He started that in the early 70’s. 1972 is about when he started doing tours of the Holy Land USA.  When Bob could no longer run it, he donated it to a local church. Later it was sold to Tree of Life in Lynchburg. In 2009 it was split up into 6 lots and auctioned off. We now own 2 of the 6 lots.

(The Sloan's were Congressional Award Winners for Angels of Adoption presented by Willie & Corrie Robinson of Duck Dynasty.)

The large building/barn (partially built in the 1800's) was converted into living quarters and was home to their family of 20 before a fire damaged part of the home.  Certified structurally sound, with some TLC it could easiely become a movie set, a wedding or event venue or back to a beautiful home. That area now serves as storage and a workshop for the property and family, while the other part of the building has recently been used as a gift shop, staging area for tours, a food pantry and a small church.

Plans were in the works for an event center, camping, horse back riding and conference center and a site plan is below in documents.
