Home's history

The "Pioneer-Failing" house is listed as a "contributing" home on the City of Milwaukie's historic resources list.
https://www.milwaukieoregon.gov/planning/historic-resources-preservation-0

It was originally owned by the Henry Failing family and is said to have been built in 1859.  Failing was an early mayor of Portland and was married to another prominent Portland pioneer, Emily Corbett.

Henry and Emily's daughters arranged for the home to be transported by barge down the river to Milwaukie in 1890, where it was re-established on Lake Kellogg. It is said that moving homes was more common then, and that the house was taken apart for the barge trip, with the pieces all numbered, and then reassembled.

In 1914 the home was moved once more, across Lake Road to sit on a new foundation in its peaceful and beautiful present location.
